App Description
Researchers often face challenges in designing and optimizing western blot (immunoblot) experiments due to variability in protein characteristics, cell lines, antibodies, and detection systems. To address this, a digital Immunoblot Tool was developed to guide scientists through experiment planning, optimization, and troubleshooting using data-driven recommendations.

UX Case Study: Immunoblot (Western Blot) Smart Assistant
Western blot experiments are complex and often require multiple decisions around proteins, reagents, and conditions, leading to inconsistent results and time-consuming workflows. This project focused on designing a smart, guided tool that simplifies experiment planning, optimization, and troubleshooting through a structured, user-friendly experience with data-driven recommendations.
Problem
Designing and optimizing western blot experiments is complex, requiring multiple decisions around protein selection, cell lines, antibodies, and detection methods. Researchers often rely on trial-and-error, leading to inconsistent results and wasted time.
Solution
A guided digital tool was designed to simplify the workflow through a step-by-step experience—helping users plan new experiments, optimize existing ones, and troubleshoot failed blots with data-driven recommendations.
Approach
- Simplified decision-making into 3–4 key questions
- Provided personalized recommendations (cell lines, lysates, antibodies, detection reagents)
- Enabled dynamic report generation with optimized protocols
- Integrated image-based troubleshooting for rapid issue resolution
Impact
- Reduced experiment setup time
- Improved reproducibility and success rates
- Minimized trial-and-error in lab workflows
- Delivered a more intuitive, guided user experience
Research & Insights
Research involved interviews with researchers and analysis of western blot workflows, along with a review of existing practices. Key insights revealed a heavy reliance on trial-and-error, challenges in selecting appropriate cell lines, lysates, and antibodies, and a strong need for quick, reliable guidance, while troubleshooting was found to be time-consuming and inconsistent. These findings led to design decisions focused on creating a step-by-step guided experience, providing personalized recommendations, delivering clear and actionable outputs such as reports and protocols, and supporting the complete workflow from planning to optimization and troubleshooting.
